Candidate Amelia for Cardiff West. Etholiad Senedd Ieuenctid Cymru 2021, Welsh Youth Parliament Elections 2021

Etholiad Senedd Ieuenctid Cymru 2021, Welsh Youth Parliament Elections 2021, means that young people aged between 11- 18 years old can vote for a candidate in their area. Voting will take place between 1-22nd November 2021.

We interviewed Amelia ahead of the youth parliament elections and we think you’ll agree that Amelia is a leader of the future.

Candidate Amelia is a focused young person with heart and a real ambition to make a difference in her community. Plus Amelia is growing up in a single parent household and is a real inspiration to other young people.

Find out more about Amelia below.

What inspired you to get into politics?

When I look around  the world I see lots of inequalities and lots of things that I disagree with and  I know that I have the power to make a change. Gender inequalities, sexual harassment in schools (inappropriate touching and consent) and creating unisex bathrooms. I will also be  looking  for opportunities to change the curriculum.

You have in your manifesto about child mental health services, can you talk more about this?
I know that  the child mental health services are appalling,  there are 3 years  waiting lists and lack of support when you need it. There isn't enough support and mental health hasn't been prioritised enough.

What challenges do you think young people face in single parent households?

The decisions being made for them, not being able to make an individual decision.

What benefits are there from living in a single  parent household?

It's good and beneficial to have one set of rules for each household and not have to worry about fighting.

What do you think young people in Wales need for a mentally healthy future?

I believe that young people need better mental health support in the NHS and in schools. I also know that young people would really benefit from more mental health support to recover from the effects of Covid.

How can young people contact you and learn about your manifesto?
